For the thousands that watched the Sistine Chapel’s chimney with baited breath in Vatican City over the past few days, millions more worldwide sat glued to screens awaiting the conclave’s decision. As quickly as the smoke turned, social media platforms exploded with people (or Catholics and journalists, at least) pontificating about the picked pope. Leading that charge were the thousands using phones and tablets to snap photos of Pope Francis as he addressed the crowd in Vatican City.

With thousands of mobile devices raised high, those on the ground in Vatican City spreading word of the new pope embodied the change of how mobile has become the fastest growing arena for social media.

Since Facebook started pushing sm on smart phones in 2008, mobile users have grown from 10 million to 680 million. According to Nielsen Ratings, both Facebook and blogs saw a decline in unique users of PCs while phones and tablet use nearly doubled. This is largely due to the mass of smartphone users in the United States. Over half of the nation is currently using smartphone technology, and tablet-use has seen dramatic increases through the last year.

From Nielsen’s 2012 Social Media Report

In their “10 Essentials for Social Media in 2013”, Etelman Digital cited a market research firm that said a majority of smartphone users access social media sites or apps on a daily basis. It also found that nearly a third (31%) of the time people spend using the internet on mobile devices was on social networking sites.

Much of the successes in mobile social media can be traced to access. Rapid advancements in accessibility with 3g, mobile hotspots, etc. allow for social media anywhere, at any time. (A bit dated and optimistic, but interesting noneltheless).

Many social apps like Vine, Instagram, Tumblr… utilize the mobile devices to give people a way to easily create and share compelling content within separate social channels. As was the case for the tens of thousands of photos shared from Vatican City over the past week.

Also, mobile SM is streamlining apps and websites for mobile devices to give on-the-go users easy access to the information they need. The constant connectivity that mobile offers allowed mobile devices to dominate second screen experiences. Mobile users continue drop in on real-time social media discussions about national events, whether they are in front of a tv or not. As the social landscape evolves, the incorporation (or substitution) of mobile and PC will continue to grow to fit the needs of media consumers.
